The AKC and the DPCA
THE DOBERMAN STANDARD: The DPCA is the parent club for all Dobermans regardless of color. It is their job to write the standards in which Dobermans are to be judged against in Conformation assessments. Why have a standard? Well the standard was created to have a model or blueprint in which to go by that defines what a perfect ideal Doberman would look like. There is no such Doberman, and there never will be. The perfect Doberman does not exist. The standard is just a guideline, a tool which you use to set a trend of similarity, it is NOT however set in stone. Standards are ever constantly being revised, changed to better fit today's version of modern Dobermans. If you read the original standard as it was written in the early 1900's you would find a much different dog being described the the modern Dobes of today. Standards serve a very necessary purpose, and without standards we would be lost for guidance and uniformity within our breed. However, we must not loose sight of the unpredictability when breeding purebred dogs. Standards are very strict and uniform, but the creation of life is always random. You could NEVER expect every purebred Doberman puppy created to conform to the standard, it will never happen. Just as the perfect Doberman will never exist.
THE MOVEMENT TO BAN WHITE DOBERMANS, WHY? Some people including the DPCA have taken a position against the white Doberman, and hope to deny the white Doberman AKC registration privileges. WHY? I am not sure why. That question may never be answered. White Dobermans are indeed purebred Dobermans, are they not? And the AKC is a records keeping service right? You see it was my understanding that the AKC is paid to keep track of stud books, that they are paid money to maintain records keeping. And so if you pay your to register your purebred dog descended from two purebred parents contained within the AKC studbooks, how on earth could the AKC deny your dog its birthright based solely on a coat color? When did the AKC stop being a records keeping service? It is really quite simple when you break it down on paper. Two purebred AKC registered Dobermans are mated. 10 purebred Doberman puppies result. Two black males, two black females, two red females, two blue males, one fawn female, and one white female, makes up this colorful litter of purebred Doberman puppies. If the DPCA had its way automatically the white Dobe pup would be denied registration, or be given limited registration. But lets look a little bit closer. One of the black female puppies has a very large white patch on her chest that exceeds the permissible ¼" square. Why should this puppy be granted full AKC registration privileges? If you were to go by the DPCA logic, would this puppy would be disqualified by the standard any less then the white dobe puppy? Lets move onto one of the red females. This puppy is born with an obviously undershot jaw, as well as several missing teeth. The undershot exceeds more than 1/8 of an inch, and a total of 5 teeth are missing. Both of these flaws constitutes a "Disqualifying Fault," under the DPCA written standard. Tell me how this puppy deserves full AKC registration privileges, while the white Doberman puppy does not? Are these both not disqualifying faults under the Doberman standard? Moving on to one of the blue males. This male puppy has only one properly descended testicle. This dog would be excused from competition, and would also be a carrier of the single testicle trait. How can this dog be more AKC registerable then the white Doberman puppy who's only flaw is her coat color? It seems that the DPCA is more interested in keeping dogs with serious disqualification's WITHIN the gene pool rather then OUT of the gene pool wouldn't you say? If the argument is that disqualifying faults should be denied AKC registration privileges why only the movement against dogs not of an allowed color? Why not the total inclusion of all disqualification's? Why not petition for a "Z" tracking system against the dogs who have missing teeth, or with undershot or overshot jawlines? If it is the DPCA's position to preserve the standard then why are the only targeting coat colors? WHY?
THE TRUTH, THE LIES, AND THE COVER-UPS: The DPCA in its attempts to discourage the breeding of white and white factored Dobermans has distributed and promoted a program called "Operation White Out." Despite the advertisements, inserts, and other negative propaganda distributed by the DPCA against the white Doberman, the birth and AKC registration of white and white factored Dobermans continues to dramatically rise with each passing year. More and more white and white factored Dobermans are being purchased from abroad and exported into other countries. If the white Doberman is such an undesirable coat color why then does its numbers continue to dramatically rise, almost doubling with each passing year? The truth is that MANY people own, love and support the breeding and owning of white Dobermans. The lies spread by the DPCA about mysterious white Doberman diseases, as well as claims of the dogs being "Tyrosine Positive Partial Albinos" are merely scare tactics used to dupe unsuspecting potential white puppy buyers into thinking white Dobermans are something they are not. They are not unhealthy, in fact white Dobermans suffer no more and no less disease then colored Dobermans do. There is not ONE disease that white Dobermans suffer from that excludes colored Dobermans, NOT ONE! And as I explained earlier, being a "Partial Albino" is nothing rare in the world of canine coat colors. If we were to buy into this theory that all partial albinos are unhealthy, then we must include all breeds who's coat colors fall into the "C" series, and oh boy, that would be quite a large grouping of dogs indeed! That would mean denying AKC registration to millions of dogs who's coat colors fall into the "C" series color pattern, and would result in the destruction of whole breeds based solely on partial albinism. You CANNOT deny AKC registration to white Dobermans without denying AKC registration to all partial albinos, and are we really prepared to do that? Does the DPCA really expect the AKC to start denying registrations of its purebred dogs strictly on the basis of coat colors? And what about other breeds with disqualified coat colors like red Rottweiliers, or brindle Pugs, or white Schnauzers, white Boxers, silver Labradors, lemon Dalmatians, and the list goes on and on and on! Is the AKC prepared to start denying AKC registrations to all of these purebred dogs as well?
GIVE US OUR CHANCE: We the supporters of white Dobermans would like to be heard on this very important issue concerning our beloved white Dobermans! We acknowledge the role and position taken on by the DPCA regarding its policy on white Dobermans, and we respect their opinion. But this is where it must stop. The DPCA MUST NOT be allowed to remove our rights to purebred dog registrations within the AKC studbooks! OUR DOGS ARE INDEED PUREBRED! Let the DPCA continue to deny the whites access to the conformation show ring, after all they are the ones who must write the standard. But lets stop the lies, RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW! Ask the thousands of owners of white and white factored Dobermans how they would feel if the AKC were to take a political position of denying purebred dogs their birthright? Ask the thousands of owners how they feel about a records keeping service refusing to take accurate records? Ask yourselves what may come of this if you did deny white Dobermans AKC registrations? What would be next? Hundreds of parents clubs now could be demanding similar restrictions against anything and everything they find to be against their standards. Imagine parents clubs rewriting standards just to force such an exclusion of any deviation they find invaluable? Where would it end?
WHITE DOBERMANS ARE HERE TO STAY: Please consider this very serious situation carefully. All we ask is to be heard. White Dobermans are here to stay with or without the AKC. The integrity of the registry would be greatly compromised if such a turn of events were to ever come about. Many breeders would be forced to lie on registrations to retain their AKC papers. Many have already stated they will just register their dogs as Isabella/Fawns rather then loose their AKC registrations. While others would forever turn away from the AKC all together loosing faith in the entire system, refusing to support the AKC with any future dog registrations regardless of their Dobermans coat colors. Please consider all this and allow us the opportunity to speak for ourselves and our white Dobermans BEFORE any decisions are made? We sincerely hope an invitation will be extended to us the many supporters of white Dobermans if and when this highly debatable issue should be raised again by the DPCA before the Board of Directors, or any other forum.
