Are White Dobermans ALBINO?
To answer this question lets start with basic canine coat color genetics. In dogs to be an albino you must have pink/red eyes with a pure white coat. This is what is known as a complete albino or just plain and simply an albino dog. In other species you may find examples of complete albinos with pigmented eyes, but in dogs, wolves, or coyotes you MUST have pink/red eyes to be a true or complete "C" series albino. There is also a second type of albinism in dogs, this is known as the "P" series albino, or ocular albinism. In this case only the eyes are affected showing the typical albino pink/red iris totally devoid of pigment, but the coat still contains color. Please note, in BOTH cases the albino dog MUST have pink/red eyes in order to be classified as an albino. If the dog does not present itself with a pink iris and a red pupil then it CANNOT be an albino. Pretty simple huh?
White Doberman eye colors come in many shades ranging from blue, to green, to golden amber, but never pink. Also white Dobermans have pigmented creme to tan base coats with distinct pure snowy white markings. It is very obvious that white Dobermans cannot be complete albinos because they produce pigment in their coats and eyes. So horray! One fact resolved, NO! White Dobermans ARE NOT albino.

Are white Dobermans "Partial Albinos?"
PARTIAL ALBINOS? Again lets take a look at canine coat colors. Coat colors are divided into groups and are labeled with letters starting with the letter "A" for Agouti, "B" for Black, "C" for Albino, and so on. Many, many, many, canine coat colors fall under the "C" series category. This would include Salt and Pepper Miniature/Standard/Giant Schnauzers, West Highland White Terriers, Norwegian Elkhounds, and so on and so on. This "C" series category is where the crème gene responsible for producing the white Dobermans coat color would be classified. Being a "Partial Albino," is nothing rare in canine coat colors, in fact all the coat colors considered to be partial albinos listed above excluding white Dobermans of course are the standard coat colors that these breeds are known for. Do we call a S & P Mini Schnauzer an albino? NO! Do we call Westies albinos? NO! Why don't we call these dogs albinos? Because it is VERY obvious they are NOT albinos, even if the coat colors they possess fall under the "C" series albino gene loci. Are white Dobermans "Partial Albinos?" yes, all dogs who's coat colors fall under the "C" series are partial albinos. Are white Dobermans Albinos? Definitely NOT! White Dobermans carry pigment in their eyes and coat, pigment making the base coat crème with pure white markings, and pigment making the eyes blue or green or golden amber. White Dobermans are not pigmentless red eyed albinos, and think about it, they definately do not look like red eyed white albino rabbits, therefore they can not and never will be albinos. Again pretty simple right?
Are white Dobermans HEALTHY?
YES! White Dobermans are normal healthy happy dogs! No Doberman is disease free, all Dobermans suffer from breed prone diseases. I kept asking so what is the white Doberman disease? Well there is NONE! White Dobermans do not have ONE disease that colored Dobermans do not, ALL Dobermans carry the same diseases regardless of coat color. And this makes sense, you wouldnt think that salt and pepper Mini Schnauzers carry more diseases then the black and silvers would you? In fact salt and pepper coated dogs are classified as partial albinos under the "C" series albino gene, and black and silver, or soild black coated Schnauzers are classified under the "B" Black series, but the most popular Schnauzer coat color is, guess what? THE PARTIAL ALBINO! No lets face the facts, and those FACTS are that white Dobermans ARE HEALTHY, and ARE NOT ALBINOS. |
